Clinical Study for Dogs with Chronic Enteropathy
OpenCurrently Enrolling
Comparison of diet and probiotic vs. diet alone to control clinical signs of chronic enteropathy and diarrhea in dogs
Study Goals: This study aims to evaluate a new probiotic-based therapeutic for chronic enteropathy and chronic diarrhea in dogs. Targeted alteration of the gut microbiome in patients with chronic diarrhea has emerged as an opportunity to directly address a fundamental pathology. The probiotic-based therapeutic under evaluation in this study is made up of three microbes sourced from healthy dogs: Peptacetobacter (Clostridium) hiranonis, Megamonas funiformis, and Enterococcus faecium. The goal of this study is to investigate the activity of a hydrolyzed protein diet with the novel probiotic in managing the clinical signs of chronic enteropathy when compared to the effects of a hydrolyzed diet alone. This is a prospective, multicenter, controlled and randomized clinical field study.
What to expect: The study is expected to last 60 days, during which your dog will be scheduled for 6 visits (at no charge). Eligible patients will be randomized 1:1 into the diet only vs diet plus probiotic groups. All dogs will receive a hydrolyzed protein formulation as their sole diet for the duration of the study (60 days).
Eligibility criteria:
* Chronic small or large bowel diarrhea for at least 3 weeks warranting endoscopic gastrointestinal biopsies
* Cortisol >2 mcg/dL or ACTH stimulation test not consistent with Addison’s disease
* Evidence of lymphoplasmacytic, eosinophilic, or plasmacytic enteritis on endoscopic biopsies
* Negative fecal floatation and Giardia ELISA
Benefits of Participation:
All costs for exams and diagnostic tests will be fully covered for participating pet owners (approx. $8,000 value)
* Initial and recheck exam fees
* All screening diagnostics
* Endoscopy procedure and biopsies
* Purina HA diet for duration of study
